OUR TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY

Our Team believes that Full Recovery is Possible, and we aim to create a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment in order to facilitate the journey towards recovery that all our clients embark on when they commence treatment with us. As Eating Disorders and Psychological, Behavioural, Emotional, Addictive, Biochemical, and Spiritual in nature We believe that several therapeutic approaches need to be used concurrently and a multidisciplinary team are needed in order for treatment to be effective. We believe it is necessary to empower each individual with skills, knowledge, and fresh perspectives in order that they can develop a healthy relationship with food, body and weight.

Our Treatment Philosophy Involves…

Motivating the Individual to accept they have a problem and then motivating them to want to do something about it.

Early Interventions involve behavioural changes ie the implementation of regularised eating habits in order to restore biochemical function.

Addressing destructive behaviours ie restricting, bingeing, purgeing, self harming, over exercising, taking laxatives, by helping the individual develop life/coping skills to deal with the psychological and emotional issues that are maintaining these behaviours.

Examples of these skills are ….

  • - Anxiety Reduction
  • - Communication
  • - Planning
  • - Problem Solving
  • - Relaxation
  • - Stimulus Control (managing food in the environment)
  • - Social Skills.

Helping the individual to discover the adaptive function (purpose) of the eating disorder behaviours and what the behaviours mean to them. Example …. I feel I have so many problems and I don’t know how to solve them. Instead if I feel fat , I can solve it by restricting my food and losing weight, so my behaviour with food is serving a purpose. This means I don’t have to think about all my other problems for a while !

Helping the individual to get the purpose served without resorting to destructive behaviours.

Helping the individual to identify and address ‘The Real Issues’

Helping the client to acknowledge that within them there is their ‘Healthy Self’ ad their ‘Eating Disorder Self’ and their disordered self is maintaining the behaviour . Our aim is not to try and get rid of their disordered self , instead learn from it and understand why it developed.

Helping the individual set up a dialogue with their healthy and disordered self so their healthy self can become stronger and ultimately want to let the disordered seLf go !

Helping the individual to feel accepted, understood and validated.

Helping the individual to understand that we do not want to take their eating disorder from them, instead we are going to help them to want to let it go. Their behaviour is regulating how they feel so we cannot take something away from someone without putting something in place first, hence we help them build skills to deal with their issues/conflicts/feelings.

Helping the individual develop ‘Emotional Literacy’ which involves helping the individual identify, acknowledge, accept, and express their feelings in a way that honours themselves and others.

Helping the individual to manage difficult feelings by separating their eating behaviour from these feelings.

Finally helping the individual to integrate their healthy and disordered self so they can go and have a normal healthy relationship with food, body and weight.
